The Lois Ann L. Moran, was built in 2008 - 2009 at Washburn and Doughty Associates of Boothbay, ME. She is rated at 5,100 horsepower, she is fitted with an INTERcon "C" coupler system. The Lois Ann is an ATLANTIC IV class tug designed by Ocean Tug and Barge Engineering. She represent a slightly smaller design than the ATLANTIC III, fitted with a full forecastle to create more room, and maintains the efficient single chine hull design of the Atlantic III, with a slightly narrower beam of 36(ft). She is fully SOLAS certified, with EMD 12 cylinder 645 F block engines and Lufkin gears. Her barge was built by Bay Shipbuilding. She features a spill-proof fuel transfer system. And exceptionally large rudders for enhanced maneuverability, and a special arrangement of tanks, structure and hull shape that allows the relatively small hull for improved stability characteristics. Powered by two EMD 12-645-F7 main engines she is rated at 5,100 horsepower turning two Rolls Royce new generation five bladed propellers. her electrical service is provided by three 99kW turning at 1800RPMs. She features EMI/ACCU automation. Her accommodation include two single state rooms and five double state rooms. She is 121' (ft) long, with a beam of 36 '(ft) and a draft of 18 '(ft). She is classed ABS Class MC A1 Unlimited\Towing Service. She is outfitted with a capstan on her stern and is capable of carrying 141,763 gallons of fuel; 15,818 gallons of fresh water, 4,838 gallons of lube oil, 36,724 gallon ballast capacity. The Lois Ann L. Moran was the first tug to be launched following a devastating fire at Washburn and Doughty Associates, her hull was under construction inside of the building that caught fire and subsequently burned to the ground. The hull was saved, and the shipyard was rebuilt around the hull. She is married to the 118,000 bbl barge Philadelphia. The unit is assigned to Moran Towing of New York and New Jersey.
